Global Ports Terminals Handles 1 Million Tonnes of EuroChem MCC Fertilisers

St. Petersburg marine terminals Petrolesport and First Container Terminal (PLP and FCT respectively, owned and managed by Global Ports, marine container terminal operator of Delo Group) handled 1 million tonnes of fertilisers from the Mineral and Chemical Company EuroChem since the start of operations in 2022 to December 2023. This includes 130,000 tonnes handled using Global Ports' own special bulk containers between August and December 2023 under the contract the parties signed earlier this year.

The interim results of the partnership since the start of commercial shipments with bulk containers in August were discussed at a meeting on December 21 by Global Ports CEO Albert Likholet and the Head of Operational Logistics of EuroChem MCC Sergei Timofeev.

EuroChem fertilisers are loaded into Global Ports at three manufacturing plants: Phosphorit (Leningrad Region), NEV Azot (Stavropolski Krai) and NAK Azot (Tulskaya oblast). Transportation to St. Petersburg port in container trains is provided by TransContainer (railway container operator, also part of Delo Group). Currently, there are 11 cargo trains on round trips. In just five months, 70 container trains were sent for loading. By the end of 2024, EuroChem plans to ship up to one million tonnes of fertilisers via Global Ports' terminals in St. Petersburg using bulk containers.

To optimise business processes, Global Ports and EuroChem piloted an employee experience sharing project in autumn 2023. In October, employees from EuroChem's head office, as well as Nevinnomysskiy Azot and Novomoskovskiy Azot plants visited PLP and FCT terminals to learn about intra-port logistics and the specifics of fertilisers handling with container technology. Following the visit, EuroChem team proposed a new bilateral exchange of logistics data between the companies' IT systems within the cargo transportation to the port. On the part of Global Ports, 10 employees involved in railway and quay operations completed internships at EuroChem's workshops. The project is set to be scaled up in 2024.

In April 2023, Global Ports and EuroChem signed an agreement on shipment, transportation and handling of fertilisers using the port operator's specialised bulk containers. The partnership between EuroChem and Global Ports creates a convenient logistics solution for export of Russian chemical products through the modern and safe infrastructure of the Big Port of St. Petersburg, and generates additional non-containerised cargo flows to offset the decline in container handling volumes in the Baltics.

The technology of transporting and handling bulk cargo in special containers is flexible, fast, and efficient. The use of special containers makes it possible to speed up loading at plants, to form combined lots and to optimise the storage capacities utilization. < Back to list
