ULCT introduces new coal handling technology

ULCT’s coal complex announces that it has introduced revolver spreader technology to its operations. The equipment, which has been produced by Container Rotation Systems Pty, an Australian manufacturer, has already been tested and put into operation. An important feature of the new technology is its reduced environmental impact.

The terminal purchased ROTAINER EUROSPEC spreaders as part of its asset upgrade program. As part of the project, the company developed a coal handling process with a focus on maximising the utilisation of ULCT’s existing equipment. It has also structured the intra-terminal logistics chains. The ROTAINER EUROSPEC rotating spreaders, together with custom-made open-top containers, ensures increased efficiency of the handling cycle and minimizes dusting during coal handling operations.

ULCT is the first company in Russia to have applied revolver spreader technology to its operations. Coal is carried to the vessel holds in custom-made open-top containers. Revolver spreaders, with a patented design, enable a 180-degree container rotation and the coal is dumped quickly with minimum dust. The rotation angle of the rotator on which the spreader is fixed allows the vessel to be loaded evenly, without trimming.

Installation, tests and commissioning of the new equipment was performed by ULCT’s staff under the supervision of the representatives of Container Rotation Systems Pty and an authorized Russian dealer. Pursuant to the terms of delivery the dealer will provide 24/7 technical support to the new equipment.

The application of the revolver spreaders enables the existing equipment to be used as efficiently as possible, minimizing the idle time risks and reducing the environmental impact of the operations.

The construction of the coal handling facility at ULCT included certain measures to ensure that any ongoing impact on the environment is minimised. The total cost of these measures exceeded RUB 152 mln. The facility has wind and dust screens, a system of local treatment works, and uses dust suppression units during yard and handling operations.

As required by the Environmental Control Program, an accredited service provider, LLC TASSIS regularly makes laboratory tests of the air in the ULCT premises. The company monitors its compliance with environmental laws and all environmental programs.
